Amazon MGM Scraps Release of Film About Sam Altman’s Comeback
'Artificial' Dropped by Studio
According to НВ — Техно: On June 22 at 10:15 AM, Amazon MGM Studios decided to cancel the release of 'Artificial,' a film directed by Luca Guadagnino. The movie chronicles the 2023 ousting of OpenAI founder Sam Altman and his subsequent reinstatement as CEO. The studio invested $40 million in the project and had slated its premiere for the 2026 SXSW festival. Now, Amazon MGM is actively seeking a new distributor to handle the film’s release.
Star Cast and Potential Buyers
Andrew Garfield stars in the lead role in 'Artificial,' while Ike Barinholtz portrays Elon Musk. Following the decision to pull the film, several companies have emerged as possible buyers interested in acquiring the project:
- Neon
- A24
- Focus Features
- Netflix
- Clockwork Warner Bros.
However, as of the time of reporting, none of these firms have secured the distribution rights.
An Amazon representative stated that the studio holds Luca Guadagnino in high regard as an award-winning director and hopes to collaborate with him again in the future. The representative added,
“The film will be better served coming out through another studio.”
This move comes as a surprise given the recent announcement of a long-term strategic partnership between Amazon and OpenAI, under which Amazon is investing $50 billion in OpenAI’s technologies.
Amazon MGM’s decision to abandon 'Artificial' highlights the unpredictable nature of the film industry, where even substantial financial commitments do not guarantee a project’s success. Against the backdrop of the company’s deepening ties with OpenAI, this choice may signal a shift in Amazon’s content priorities regarding tech-focused narratives. The outcome now hinges on whether a new distributor will step in to bring the film’s ambitious vision to life.
