Thea Energy Unveils Helios: A 400 MW Commercial Fusion Power Plant Project

According to НВ — Техно: American firm Thea Energy has revealed its design for Helios, a commercial fusion power plant engineered to deliver a continuous output of approximately 400 MW of electricity to the grid. This innovative system was detailed in the September 9 issue of Fusion Engineering and Design. The project has successfully obtained certification from the U.S. Department of Energy, with full-scale operation anticipated sometime in the 2030s.
Advanced Technology Behind Helios
Helios is based on a stellarator configuration that uses magnetic confinement to sustain ultra-hot plasma. Thea Energy’s engineers have introduced groundbreaking improvements by replacing bulky three-dimensional magnets with a set of flat, planar coils controlled via software. This coil arrangement allows for compensation of manufacturing imperfections and component wear over time. The plant features a large 8-meter radius and incorporates an X-point divertor system designed for continuous removal of reaction byproducts. Additionally, its modular sector design enables rapid access for routine maintenance and repairs.
Thea Energy stands out as the first company to have its stellarator concept independently reviewed and validated, highlighting the seriousness of its approach to advancing fusion energy.
“The Helios plant is technically feasible, reliable, and requires no scientific breakthroughs to commercialize,” said David Gates.
Furthermore, Benedict Geiger emphasized that
“the published designs significantly reduce risks that were previously seen as major barriers for stellarators.”
The Helios project represents a promising milestone in the evolution of fusion energy, with the potential to transform the energy sector by providing a stable and environmentally friendly power source.
