Launch of New Advisory Bodies

The National Bar Association of Ukraine (NBAU) has established four new permanent collegiate advisory bodies. Among them is the Committee on Protecting Victims of Armed Aggression Against Ukraine, Compensation Mechanisms, and Euro-Integration Legal Support for Recovery, which will be chaired by former Head of the Presidential Office Andriy Yermak. The NBAU approved these committees through separate directives issued by its Chairperson, Lidiya Izovitova.

Lidiya Izovitova, a lawyer, has led the NBAU since its founding in 2012. While her formal ten-year term concluded in 2022, she continues to serve as chair as new leadership elections have not been held. Andriy Yermak, who received his license to practice law in 1995, has not worked as an attorney since February 20, 2020. In October 1997, he co-founded the 'International Legal Company' LLC with attorneys Vasyl Vashchenko and Mykhailo Prykhodko.

Composition of the New Committees

In addition to the committee led by Yermak, the other newly formed committees include:

  • The Committee on Legal Support and Protection of Rights in the Field of Mental Health, chaired by Hanna Ishchenko;
  • The Committee on Oil, Gas, and Subsoil Use, chaired by Serhiy Antonenko;
  • The Committee on Mediation, chaired by Luiza Romanadze.

It is noted that the Committee on Mediation was created through the reorganization of the former Committee on Alternative Dispute Resolution.

The establishment of these new advisory bodies reflects the NBAU's aim to enhance legal mechanisms in response to contemporary challenges facing Ukraine.

The introduction of these committees is intended to address pressing social and legal issues, particularly in the context of the ongoing armed aggression against Ukraine.

This move signals increased attention to the needs of citizens affected by the conflict and underscores the importance of legal frameworks for Euro-Integration. The new committees are also expected to contribute to the development of Ukraine's legal system, a critical task as the nation navigates the complex challenges brought by war. The National Bar Association plays a key role in shaping Ukraine's legal profession and its response to national crises.
