The Apophis Asteroid Flyby

On April 13, 2029, the asteroid Apophis—known as the 'God of Chaos'—will come within roughly 30,600 kilometers of Earth. This event marks a historic first: it will be the earliest time humanity has ever predicted an asteroid flyby that will be visible to the naked eye. Up to 7.6 billion people—nearly 90% of the global population—will have the chance to see it. Scientists confirm that there is zero chance of a collision during this pass or within the next century.

Shaped somewhat like a peanut, Apophis measures about 450 meters across at its widest point. It originates from the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter and currently orbits between Venus and Earth. It completes a full lap around the Sun roughly every 10.5 months.

At the start of the flyby, around 4.5 billion people in Australia and most of Asia will be able to see the asteroid. Toward the end, about 1.9 billion observers in eastern South America, North Africa, and parts of Europe will get a view. At the peak of visibility—roughly midway through the event—up to 5.7 billion people could potentially spot Apophis. North America will be the only continent where clear observation of the asteroid will not be possible.

International Asteroid Awareness Year

The United Nations has declared 2029 the International Year of Asteroid Awareness and Planetary Protection. The best images of the flyby are expected to come from astronomical observatories on Spain's Canary Islands. Apophis will shine as brightly as the stars in the Big Dipper constellation. NASA's OSIRIS-APEX mission will also attempt to fly past the asteroid.

Richard Binzel noted that 'watching Apophis is a way to share a cosmic experience and realize just how small Earth is in the vastness of space.'
