A Milestone FAA Approval for BETA Technologies
BETA Technologies has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by securing a special airworthiness certificate from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to conduct flights with prospective customers using its fully electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft, the ALIA A250. This marks the FAA’s inaugural issuance of a dedicated certification for electric VTOL aircraft aimed at market research. The first flight under this new authorization took place on October 20, 2023, covering 34 nautical miles (63 kilometers) in 20 minutes.
Flight Details and Aircraft Capabilities
The test flight connected Plattsburgh International Airport in New York with Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport in Vermont. The ALIA A250 features dual-pilot controls and is capable of carrying up to five passengers or over 1,200 pounds of cargo. Designed for versatility, it can operate from both traditional runways and without them. This aircraft shares several key systems with BETA’s conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) planes, including:
- Electric propulsion;
- Flight control computers;
- Batteries;
- Charging infrastructure.
BETA’s combined CTOL and VTOL fleet has accumulated more than 250,000 nautical miles of flight experience. The company plans to secure full FAA certification for the ALIA A250 before launching regular commercial services. Looking ahead, BETA Technologies and Air New Zealand aim to begin a four-month trial of the ALIA CX300 cargo electric aircraft in New Zealand by the end of 2025. This zero-emission, quiet-flying plane aligns with New Zealand’s clean energy profile, as much of its electricity is generated from renewable sources.
Kyle Clark, a BETA Technologies spokesperson, commented: "This authorization brings vertical flight closer to the people and places that will rely on it for their work, building on BETA’s pioneering track record in the industry."
Receiving FAA certification is a critical advancement for BETA Technologies, enabling the company to expand its eVTOL technology into the marketplace and prepare for future commercial operations. Electric VTOL aircraft have the potential to revolutionize urban air mobility by reducing traffic congestion and lowering pollution levels. With growing global emphasis on sustainable technologies, innovations like the ALIA A250 could play a pivotal role in shaping the future of aviation.
As the electric aviation sector continues to evolve, Vertical Aerospace has made significant advancements by securing 30G seats and advanced navigation systems for its Valo eVTOL aircraft. This development highlights the growing competition among manufacturers to enhance passenger experience and operational efficiency in the rapidly emerging market for electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft.
