Poachers in Kyiv Region Cause Nearly $7,000 in Damages During Spawning Season Crackdown

Браконьєри в Київській області завдали збитків на майже 7 тисяч доларів під час боротьби з незаконним виловом риби.

Illegal Fishing Uncovered in Vyshhorod District

Authorities in the Vyshhorod district have documented an illegal fishing operation that inflicted over 90,000 Ukrainian hryvnias (roughly $2,450) in damages to the state. The violation was detected during a routine patrol near the Irpin River, where officers discovered individuals fishing during the spawning season—a period when such activity is strictly prohibited. A forensic team was dispatched to the scene, seizing both fishing gear and the illegally caught fish. A pre-trial investigation has been launched under Article 249, Part 1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, with procedural oversight provided by the Vyshhorod District Prosecutor's Office. Spawning season restrictions are critical to preserving fish populations, making these offenses particularly harmful to local ecosystems.

Violations Across Multiple Regions

Beyond Vyshhorod, similar illegal fishing incidents have been reported in Kyiv, the Bila Tserkva district, and the town of Hostomel. In Kyiv, cases involved the unauthorized capture of both fish and crayfish. On the Rostavytsia River near the village of Trushky in the Bila Tserkva district, a poacher using two nets managed to catch:

  • 29 crayfish;
  • eight silver crucian carp;
  • six perch;
  • six rudd;
  • three roach;
  • two zander (pike-perch);
  • two ruffe.

Meanwhile, in the settlement of Hostomel, law enforcement apprehended a 41-year-old man who was illegally harvesting aquatic resources using nets and a rubber boat. The environmental damage from his activities is estimated at over 158,000 hryvnias (approximately $4,300). Authorities continue to ramp up patrols and investigations to combat such violations and safeguard water resources.

These incidents across different regions highlight a systemic poaching problem that threatens the ecological balance of Ukraine’s waterways. Law enforcement agencies are actively working to curb these offenses, aiming to preserve biodiversity and ensure the protection of aquatic ecosystems. Community involvement in monitoring and reporting suspicious activities is also seen as a vital tool in reducing poaching cases.

As authorities intensify their efforts to combat poaching, recent incidents illustrate the growing scale of illegal fishing activities in the Kyiv region. Notably, a separate case has emerged where poachers caused substantial environmental damage, leading to losses exceeding 91,000 hryvnias.
