Ukrainian Diesel Prices Could Hit 90 Hryvnia: A Look at the Fuel Market

Ситуація на ринку пального в Україні: прогнози та можливі наслідки зростання цін.

Diesel Fuel Prices Climb in Ukraine

Diesel prices in Ukraine are under significant upward pressure. This follows the benchmark price for diesel on the London ICE exchange surpassing $1,300 per ton. As of March 19, the average price for diesel in Ukraine had reached 79.16 UAH per liter. At OKKO stations, the price rose to 82.99 UAH per liter, while at WOG and KLO stations, diesel exceeded 81 UAH per liter. The cost of diesel at the Ukrainian border is currently 80 UAH per liter. This price surge is part of a broader trend of global energy market volatility affecting many countries.

Serhiy Kuyun, Director of the A-95 Consulting Group, forecasts that the price of diesel could reach 90 UAH per liter in the coming week. He explains the factors adding to the border price:

"It needs to be transported from the border, for example, to Kyiv. That's another 2 hryvnias. Then plus expenses, plus taxes, plus some profit."
Kuyun notes the price increase is linked to specific market disruptions:
"Today, when there is a problem there, it immediately hit prices. That's why we see them flying much faster."

Import Dependence and a New Cashback Program

Market dynamics are further influenced by the EU's monthly import of approximately 3 million tons of diesel from the Middle East. In a move to provide some relief to consumers, Ukraine is launching a fuel cashback program starting March 20. The program will return 15% of the cost for diesel, 10% for gasoline, and 5% for autogas. As of March 19, the average price for A-95 gasoline in Ukraine was 70.49 UAH per liter, while autogas was 44.12 UAH per liter.

The situation on the fuel market remains tense, and further price fluctuations are possible in the near term.

The rise in diesel prices in Ukraine, driven by higher global costs, is likely to impact transportation expenses and the price of goods and services. While the new cashback program may partially ease the financial burden for consumers, ongoing market instability creates uncertainty about future developments. Given the current global challenges affecting energy supplies, monitoring price changes remains crucial for businesses and individuals alike.

The current volatility in the fuel market raises questions about pricing stability. While the recent surge in diesel prices reflects global trends, it's interesting to note that fuel prices in Ukraine are holding steady despite rising oil costs. This contrast highlights the complexities of the energy sector and the various factors influencing local pricing strategies.
