The Impact of Nighttime Lighting on Heart Health
A comprehensive study conducted by the UK Biobank involving over 11,000 participants has revealed a significant connection between prolonged exposure to light during the night and structural changes in the heart. Specifically, the study found that such exposure is associated with thickening of the heart walls and decreased elasticity, which could indicate impaired heart function. Participants—totaling 11,071 individuals—wore wrist sensors that recorded light levels, including nighttime brightness, for a full week. Three years later, cardiac MRI scans were performed to assess heart structure and function.
Key Findings
Participants were divided into groups based on their nighttime light exposure: one group experienced lighting above 3 lux, while the other slept in near-total darkness. Those exposed to higher levels of night light showed thickening of the left ventricular wall, leading to a reduced chamber volume. Additionally, their heart muscle exhibited diminished ability to relax and change shape during contractions. Similar alterations were also observed in the right ventricle and left atrium.
Previous observational studies have linked nighttime illumination with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, but this research provides new insights into how such lighting influences the heart’s anatomy and performance.

- opting for warmer, dimmer bedside lighting;
- turning off device indicator lights.
