New rules of the National Multisubject Test in 2026

Eleventh graders in Ukraine are preparing for the national multisubject test, which will take place in 2026. According to bill No. 13650, the structure of the test will remain the same as in previous years.

Mandatory subjects for testing:

  • Ukrainian language

  • Mathematics

  • History of Ukraine

Students must also choose one of the following subjects:

  • Foreign language (English, French, German, Spanish)

  • Biology

  • Geography

  • Physics

  • Chemistry

  • Ukrainian literature

  • Cancellation of state final certification

Students graduating from school in 2026 will no longer take state final certification (DFC). This change means a complete reevaluation of the secondary education completion system.

    New order for graduates:

    • Students planning to enter university must take the NMT

    • Those who do not plan to enter will receive a diploma based on annual grades without exams

    • DFC will not be conducted in any way

Before this period, there was a practice of conducting DFC in the form of ZNO, but now these processes are completely separated. The NMT will become an entrance test, not a form of state certification.

    Two-day format: advantages and risks

The question of the possibility of conducting testing over two days is important. The current format involves taking all tests in one day. Arguments for two days:

    • Reduced stress for participants

    • Consideration of fatigue after night alarms

    • Better concentration opportunity

Problems can include a return to dual-shift assessment, risks from night alarms, complicated logistics of testing abroad, and so on.

Many higher education institutions support the two-day format, as revealed by a survey of the head of the education committee of the Verkhovna Rada, Serhiy Babak.

    Possible innovations

    • Paid test

The possibility of introducing a fee for the test for some participants is being considered. Over 25% of registered participants in 2025 are graduates of previous years, including tutors and those who take the test out of curiosity.

A draft resolution on the establishment of preparatory courses for those who did not pass the test has also been developed. In 2025, 39,000 participants (13.5%) did not achieve the required scores, most of whom were in mathematics.

    Preparation for the test

The test will be conducted in electronic format and will not include tasks with open-ended answers.

    • Tests with multiple-choice answers

    • Matching tasks

    • Open tasks with short answers (for mathematics and natural sciences)

    • Selecting three correct answers from seven

The test results will be converted into a 100-200 point system. The competitive score will be formed taking into account subject coefficients, with a maximum coefficient for the chosen subject.

    Registration and procedures

Registration for the test will open at the beginning of March through a personal account on the UCUO website. Required documents include a passport, identification code, and a certificate of completion of education in 2026.

Important conditions for conducting the test:

    • NMT is a comprehensive assessment, failing to pass any single subject will result in the test not being counted at all

    • Results from different years cannot be combined

    • Appeals are not accepted

    • Restrictions on the use of gadgets during testing

Final decision on the test format is expected soon, which will allow applicants to prepare adequately for exams.

Preliminary reports mentioned expenses for the 'Schoolboy Package'.

After the introduction of new rules for the National Multisubject Test in 2026, Ukrainian students will have the opportunity to undergo testing taking into account new formats and requirements. Changes in the assessment system will be an important stage in the development of education in the country, aimed at improving the quality and objectivity of the assessment of school students' knowledge.
