Despite Pledges, Egypt Receives Stolen Ukrainian Wheat for the Fourth Time

Єгипет знову виявився в центрі скандалу, отримавши крадене українське зерно вже вчетверте.

The ASOMATOS Vessel Incident

Authorities at Egypt's Abu Qir port authorized the unloading of 26,900 metric tons of stolen Ukrainian wheat from the vessel ASOMATOS, ignoring a formal legal assistance request from Ukraine's Prosecutor General. This marks the fourth such occurrence at Egyptian ports since April 2025. The cargo was exported by the sanctioned entity 'Agro-Fregat' through occupied Crimea.

Ukraine's Prosecutor General submitted the request to Egypt's Ministry of Justice just five days before the ship was unloaded. Notably, on April 3, 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Cairo had agreed to stop accepting grain taken by Russia from Ukraine's temporarily occupied territories. That promise was made following talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

The Broader Ukrainian Grain Situation

Between January and April 2026, 25 vessels from Russia's so-called grain fleet completed roughly 50 direct voyages from closed ports in occupied areas to third countries. More than 850,000 tons of grain have been shipped out of occupied Ukrainian ports, with over half of that amount leaving from Sevastopol.

Andriy Sybiha, a Ukrainian official, commented on the situation, stating: 'Despite repeated warnings, the vessel ASOMATOS was permitted to unload 26,900 tons of stolen Ukrainian wheat in Abu Qir.'

This incident serves as a reminder of the Holodomor and underscores the urgent need to uphold Ukraine's right to protect its agricultural resources.

The ASOMATOS unloading highlights the complex challenges Ukraine faces in defending its agricultural assets, particularly within the realm of international diplomacy. Despite official assurances from Egyptian leadership, these recurring breaches point to the necessity for stronger actions and enhanced cooperation between nations to prevent future occurrences.

The ongoing situation regarding stolen Ukrainian grain continues to escalate, as evidenced by Egypt’s recent actions. This incident not only highlights the challenges Ukraine faces in safeguarding its agricultural resources but also draws parallels with similar cases, such as the recent demand for the seizure of the vessel Panormitis, laden with stolen grain, by Ukraine. These developments underscore the urgent need for coordinated international responses to protect Ukraine's agricultural integrity.
