Ex-Police Official Abroskin Refuses to Return Polish Award Amid Diplomatic Row

Колишній правоохоронець Аброськін відмовився повернути польську нагороду через дипломатичні суперечки.

Vyacheslav Abroskin Speaks Out

Vyacheslav Abroskin, a former first deputy head of the National Police of Ukraine, has publicly opposed the decision by Ukrainian officials to return Polish state honors. He disagrees with Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, who gave back a Polish award following remarks by Polish President Karol Nawrocki about Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Abroskin, who received his Polish award from President Andrzej Duda, stated he has no intention of returning it. For him, the decoration represents 'a sign of recognition for my specific contributions to the Polish state and the Polish people, for which I was honored.'

Strained Relations Between Ukraine and Poland

Earlier, several high-profile Ukrainian figures announced they would return their Polish awards:

  • Head of the Presidential Office Kyrylo Budanov
  • Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha
  • Ukraine's Ambassador to Poland Vasyl Bodnar

Abroskin noted that history will ultimately judge the situation, adding:

“Mutual insults and conflicts will only make things worse for both Ukraine and Poland. At a time like this, our common enemy—Russia—will applaud every new misunderstanding between our nations.”
- Vyacheslav Abroskin

Abroskin's stance highlights a rift within Ukraine's political landscape regarding how to handle relations with Poland, especially given the deep historical and cultural ties between the two countries. The decision by some officials to return their awards appears to be a protest against certain statements by Polish leaders, but as Abroskin argues, such moves risk damaging bilateral cooperation when unity against Russian aggression is most critical.

As the diplomatic tensions escalate, the recent decision by Ukraine's Ambassador to Poland to return his state award sheds light on the growing divide among Ukrainian officials regarding their stance on Polish recognition. This move, seen by some as a protest, raises questions about the impact such actions may have on the fragile relations between the two neighboring countries during a critical time.
