Return of the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland

According to Главком: Vasyl Bodnar, Ukraine's ambassador to Poland, has announced he is giving back the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland. This move comes after Polish President Karol Nawrocki stripped Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of the Order of the White Eagle. Earlier, Head of the Presidential Office Kyrylo Budanov and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha also stated they would relinquish their Polish honors.

Reactions and Emotional Context

Bodnar, who has spent the last year and a half working to strengthen bilateral ties between Ukraine and Poland, stated:

'But I cannot stand aside from a decision I consider historically unjust. While understanding the emotions prevailing in Poland, I cannot accept that the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy-a friend of Poland, the leader of a nation bravely defending itself against the Russian aggressor and safeguarding peace in Europe-has been stripped of Poland's highest honor.' - Vasyl Bodnar

In his remarks, Bodnar also emphasized that amid Russia's war against Ukraine, this decision feels especially painful. 'In the context of Russia's war against Ukraine, under attacks from missiles and drones, this decision is perceived as particularly hurtful and emotional, as a gesture toward the entire Ukrainian people. Under these circumstances, I am compelled to return the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland,' he noted.

Additionally, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha confirmed he is returning the Commander's Cross with Star of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland. Concluding his statement, Bodnar stressed the importance of dialogue between the two nations:

'We may hold different views and disagree, but we must not lose the ability to hear each other and seek solutions through dialogue. Let us remember that our quarrels always benefit the enemy-Moscow. I am confident that with goodwill, we will find sensible solutions.' - Vasyl Bodnar
