Energy Crisis Threatens Global Food Supply as Fertilizer Shortages Loom

Енергетичний дефіцит ставить під загрозу постачання продуктів харчування в усьому світі на фоні нестачі добрив.

How the Energy Crisis Impacts Global Agriculture

During an interview with political analyst Yuriy Romanenko, economist Oleg Ustenko outlined the severe consequences the global energy crisis holds for the world's agricultural sector. He explained that reduced access to natural gas and oil is leading to a decline in fertilizer production, which will directly result in lower crop yields.

'It's clear that if you have less gas and oil, you will have less fertilizer. Consequently, agricultural yields will fall' — Oleg Ustenko

Ustenko argued that this drop in productivity means less food will be harvested per hectare of land. This is occurring against a backdrop of stable or even rising global demand for food. The economist starkly warned that 'when you cut off a portion of supply, you are essentially cutting off a certain number of mouths to feed. That means some people will simply go hungry.' This situation highlights the fragile link between energy markets and global food security.

Forecast for Rising Food Prices

As a result of these pressures, the market for agricultural products is set for a major shift. Oleg Ustenko predicts a significant increase in food prices:

'The market for agricultural products will already move upward, seeking a new equilibrium. Where the price was 100, it will become 120 or even 150...' — Oleg Ustenko

He believes the market will search for a new balance point, which could drastically affect food affordability for a substantial part of the world's population.

Amidst these global energy challenges that are curtailing fertilizer output, monitoring the agricultural sector's health is critical. Soaring food costs could trigger serious social repercussions, including:

  • increased poverty levels in vulnerable regions;
  • a sharp deterioration in food security.

The situation demands a comprehensive strategy to address the problem, incorporating investments in alternative energy sources and innovative agricultural technologies.

The rising pressures on global food supply due to the energy crisis raise important questions about domestic price control mechanisms. Understanding the implications of this situation, particularly in Ukraine, is essential.
