EU Extends Protection for Ukrainians Until 2028, but Imposes Restrictions on Men

Європейський Союз продовжує підтримку українців до 2028 року, вводячи обмеження для чоловіків.

Temporary Protection for Ukrainians in the EU Extended

The European Commission has proposed extending temporary protection for Ukrainians in the EU until March 2028. EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner announced the plan, which would add one more year to the current protection period. Notably, this extension will not apply to men aged 23 to 60, nor to those who have already been granted protection earlier.

Support Measures and New Limitations

In addition, the European Commission is preparing restrictions for men of conscription age. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has urged EU leaders to limit the acceptance of refugees. For Ukrainians who choose to return home, the EU is offering payments of up to 2,000 euros.

'As the war continues, so must our assistance. That is why we are presenting today a proposal to extend temporary protection for another year,' Magnus Brunner stated.

This decision underscores the European Union's continued commitment to supporting Ukrainian citizens displaced by the ongoing conflict. However, the introduction of restrictions for men of military age could significantly affect certain groups' ability to receive protection, raising concerns among human rights organizations.

As the EU moves forward with its decision to extend temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees, concerns are rising regarding the potential exclusion of certain demographics. Specifically, the proposal to limit protections for men of military age has sparked debate and drawn attention from various human rights organizations.
