Belgium and Norway Yet to Deliver Any of Their Promised 36 F-16 Jets to Ukraine

Бельгія та Норвегія досі не передали жодного з обіцяних винищувачів F-16 для України.

Delays in F-16 Fighter Jet Deliveries to Ukraine

The delivery of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine is facing significant delays, primarily due to issues with Belgium and Norway. Neither country has yet transferred a single aircraft from their pledged contributions, complicating the fulfillment of commitments to Ukraine. Out of a total of 79 promised jets, approximately 36 remain undelivered, representing over 45% of the total.

Supply Issues from Belgium and Norway

Belgium committed to providing up to 30 F-16s, but the transfer process is being prolonged because its Air Force must first be re-equipped with new F-35 Lightning II aircraft. The first Belgian F-35s are not expected until 2024, and under an optimistic scenario, the handover of F-16s could stretch over several years, with a potential delivery date for some planes not before 2026-2028. Furthermore, a significant number of Belgium's F-16s require maintenance or repair before they can be transferred.

Norway, for its part, has also failed to meet its commitment to deliver six F-16 fighters. All of Norway's aircraft are currently at the Sabena Engineering facility in Belgium. Two of them were used for training Ukrainian pilots and now need repairs, while the other four were delivered disassembled. Each Norwegian jet requires about 100 missing components, and repairs have effectively not begun due to limited production capacity. The aircraft have been at the plant for nearly a year.

Ukraine has received confirmation of F-16 supplies from four countries: the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, and Norway. The Netherlands has already delivered all 24 of its promised jets, and Denmark has delivered at least 12 out of 19. However, Belgium and Norway have so far not delivered any. As of the beginning of 2026, Ukraine has not received any of the 30 F-16s from Belgium, highlighting the ongoing supply and agreement fulfillment problems. These delays are occurring as Ukraine seeks to bolster its air defenses against ongoing Russian missile and drone attacks.

The holdup in F-16 deliveries from Belgium and Norway has major implications for Ukraine's military support, as these jets are a crucial element in strengthening the country's air defense. The failure of these nations to meet their obligations jeopardizes Ukraine's strategic plans for modernizing its air force, especially amid the continuing conflict. The lack of timely delivery could also affect international relations and trust in the commitments made by partner nations.

The ongoing delays in the delivery of F-16 jets to Ukraine raise concerns about the broader implications for military support from European nations. As seen in France's dwindling MICA missile reserves, such supply chain issues can significantly impact Ukraine's defense capabilities and its negotiations for advanced military hardware. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for grasping the challenges Ukraine faces in securing necessary military aid.
