Defense Minister and Commander-in-Chief at Odds

Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has publicly acknowledged a conflict with Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, accusing the General Staff of stalling initiatives from the Defense Ministry. Fedorov called for personnel changes, specifically the replacement of both the commander-in-chief and the chief of the General Staff, arguing this is essential to eliminate what he described as 'crimes, schemes,' and practices associated with the 'Skelya' unit.

Fedorov stated that Syrskyi issued an ultimatum but did not demand an 'either him or me' scenario. After President Volodymyr Zelenskyy decided not to dismiss Syrskyi, Fedorov agreed to remain in his post. He also noted that territorial recruitment centers fall under the jurisdiction of the Ground Forces, which in turn report to the commander-in-chief.

Turmoil Within the Military Hierarchy

The commander of the 'Skelya' regiment has been suspended amid an investigation into the torture and death of soldiers. Reports indicate that the brigade commander of the 155th Brigade, who previously served in 'Skelya,' has also stepped down. Fedorov further argued that decisions to support certain individuals within the military structure are based on loyalty rather than data, which he believes undermines systemic progress.

Fedorov turned down President Zelenskyy’s offer to stay on as an advisor. He remarked that Syrskyi is unwilling to address issues openly and instead engages in backroom maneuvering.

“Syrskyi is not ready to speak openly about problems face to face. He prefers to attend meetings and weave intrigues,” Fedorov said.
In his view, this hinders efforts to achieve victory over Russia.

Sources, including Ukrinform, have reported on these developments, highlighting the growing discord within Ukraine’s military leadership.

The public rift between the Defense Minister and the Commander-in-Chief could have serious repercussions for Ukraine’s military structure, especially amid the ongoing war. Fedorov’s call for leadership changes underscores internal disagreements that may affect the effectiveness of armed forces management. Such contradictions among top military brass pose additional risks for defense operations.

In light of the ongoing tensions within the military, Fedorov has shed light on the underlying reasons for his discord with Syrskyi. His insights reveal a complex web of loyalty-driven decisions that may be hampering military effectiveness.
