FIBA Hands Down Lifetime Bans to Ukrainian Players

FIBA has imposed severe sanctions on Ukrainian basketball players Oleksandr Kolchenko and Serhiy Pryimak, handing them lifetime disqualifications for manipulating game outcomes and engaging in betting activities. A third player, Ihor Serheiev, received a suspension lasting until August 1, 2026. The investigation centered on the Singapore-based club Adroit.

According to FIBA's disciplinary panel, Kolchenko and Pryimak were found guilty of match-fixing, placing wagers on basketball competitions, and failing to report corrupt practices. Both athletes are now permanently barred from the sport. As part of the same probe, fellow Ukrainian Ihor Serheiev also faced punishment, with his suspension set to expire on August 1, 2026.

Serheiev, who is 24 years old, transferred to the Estonian club Pärnu in July 2025. His most recent team before that was Adroit in Singapore. He previously played in Ukraine for Cherkaski Mavpy and represented his country at the U-16 and U-18 youth levels. In the summer of 2024, Serheiev competed for the senior national team at the William Jones Cup tournament in Taiwan.

Ukraine's Performance on the International Stage

Amid these developments, the Ukrainian national basketball team suffered a loss to Spain in the fourth round of World Cup qualifying, with a final score of 78:64. The team had also fallen to Spain in the third round, losing 66:86. However, Ukraine delivered a strong performance in their nominally home match during the second round of qualifying, securing an 88:71 victory over Denmark.

Ukraine got off to a confident start in the qualification campaign for the 2027 FIBA World Cup, defeating Georgia 92:79 in their opening game. Oleksandr Kovliar was the standout performer, scoring 31 points over 37 minutes on the court. Additionally, Oleksandr Lypovyi contributed 13 points, while Viacheslav Bobrov recorded a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds.

The situation surrounding Ukrainian basketball players and their participation in international competitions remains tense, both in terms of disciplinary actions and the ongoing World Cup qualification matches.

These FIBA sanctions could have a significant impact on the future of Ukrainian basketball. The suspension of key players threatens not only their individual careers but also the national team's prospects. With these disqualifications, team management will need to find ways to offset the losses in order to remain competitive in upcoming games. This could reshape the roster and influence strategy for future tournaments.

As the fallout from these bans continues to shape the landscape of Ukrainian basketball, the broader implications for the sport in Europe are also being discussed. Recently, the EuroLeague president addressed the potential reintegration of Russian teams into competitions, which could further impact the dynamics of international basketball.
