Belarusian teams allowed back into international tournaments
The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has lifted its ban on Belarusian teams, following guidelines from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). This decision permits Belarusian athletes and national squads to compete under their own flag and anthem, and to re-enter the world volleyball rankings.
With this move, the FIVB becomes the latest sports body to remove restrictions on Belarus. The organization acted after the IOC advised federations to end bans on Belarusian competitors. Based on a prior ruling by the FIVB Administrative Council, Belarusian players and teams are now cleared to immediately resume participation in international volleyball events.
Broader landscape in global sports
Earlier, the International Modern Pentathlon Union and World Boxing had also dropped their restrictions. However, the International Tennis Federation and World Athletics have kept sanctions against Belarus in place. World Athletics has stated that its position will not change until peace is restored in Ukraine. Notably, the status of Belarusian tennis players could be reviewed in October.
The FIVB’s decision to allow Belarusian athletes back into international competition highlights a shift in how sports organizations are approaching the situation in Belarus and Ukraine. It may signal a gradual easing of sanctions, but not all federations are following this path, creating an uneven landscape in global sports. Observers should watch closely, as decisions by other governing bodies could shape the overall trend of Belarusian athletes returning to the international stage.
As the FIVB reopens doors for Belarusian teams, the broader implications for sports governance become evident. While some federations are easing restrictions, others, such as the ITF has maintained its ban, highlighting the inconsistent approach among sports organizations regarding Belarusian athletes. This disparity raises questions about the future of international competition and the potential for further changes across various sports.
