ITF Maintains Its Stance on Belarus and Russia

According to Главком: The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has declined to follow the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) advice to permit Belarusian representatives to compete under their national flag. The ITF reaffirmed that its suspension of the tennis federations of Belarus and Russia remains in effect. This decision underscores the continued enforcement of sanctions imposed on these nations.

On May 7, 2023, the IOC issued a recommendation urging sports federations to lift all restrictions on Belarus. However, the ITF responded to this statement by declaring:

“The International Tennis Federation confirms that the IOC's statement does not alter its position regarding the suspension of the Belarusian and Russian tennis federations, which remains in force.”

The membership status of the Belarus Tennis Federation is scheduled for review at the ITF's annual general meeting in October.

World Athletics Also Rejects IOC Proposal

In a similar move, World Athletics has also turned down the IOC's suggestion to remove sanctions against Belarusian athletes. These penalties, first implemented in March 2022, bar Belarusian and Russian athletes, officials, and support staff from participating in events. As World Athletics President Sebastian Coe stated:

“As a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the sanctions excluding Belarusian and Russian athletes remain in place.”

He further noted that “Our Council has made it clear that when there is tangible progress toward peace negotiations, it will be able to begin reviewing its decisions.”

The IOC has noted that the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Belarus maintains a good reputation and complies with the Olympic Charter. Meanwhile, the membership of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) remains suspended as the IOC's Legal Affairs Commission continues its investigation. The IOC Executive Board has expressed concerns over recent information that prompted the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to probe Russia's anti-doping system.

The decisions by the ITF and World Athletics highlight the ongoing international isolation of Belarus and Russia in the sports world, driven by Russia's aggression in Ukraine. They also demonstrate that global sports bodies are sticking to their sanctions despite the IOC's efforts to find pathways for the return of athletes from these countries. Any potential shift in this situation hinges on the progress of peace talks and the broader political climate in the region.

The ongoing debate surrounding the participation of Belarusian athletes in international competitions has sparked significant reactions across the sports community. For instance, the recent protest by the Ukrainian Olympic Committee highlights the tensions and differing stances among national federations regarding the IOC's recommendations. This situation continues to evolve, raising questions about the future of sports diplomacy and the impact on athletes from the affected nations.
