Iran has begun deploying mines in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a primary shipping lane for crude oil from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. This narrow waterway is a global energy chokepoint, handling roughly 20% of the world's seaborne crude oil. The scale of the mining operation is currently assessed as limited, involving several dozen devices. Control of the area is maintained by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in coordination with the country's regular navy.
In response to the situation, the IRGC has promised unrestricted navigation from Tuesday, March 10th, to any country that severs official ties with Washington and Jerusalem. An advisor to the IRGC commander warned that vessels transiting the Strait could become targets for attack. U.S. naval forces have not yet begun escorting civilian vessels through the Strait. President Donald Trump issued a stark ultimatum to Iran demanding the removal of the mines, stating:
'If Iran has laid any mines in the Strait of Hormuz—and we have no confirmation they have—we want them removed, immediately! If for any reason mines have been placed and are not removed at once, the military consequences for Iran will be of a scale never before seen.
