Iranian Tankers Navigate Strait of Hormuz Using New Evasive Routes

Іранські танкери прокладають інші шляхи в Ормузькій протоці для уникнення небезпек.

Iranian Tankers Adopt New Evasive Routes

Two sanctioned Iranian tankers have transited the Strait of Hormuz using a new, circuitous route, signaling a shift in maritime traffic patterns within this strategically vital waterway. The liquefied gas tanker G Summer entered the Persian Gulf by passing between the Iranian islands of Larak and Qeshm. The oil tanker Hong Lu also utilized a similar route en route to the Iraqi port of Basra. Both vessels were previously docked at Fujairah in the UAE. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global chokepoint for oil shipments, making any change in its traffic patterns significant for energy markets.

Intriguingly, just hours before the passage of the G Summer and Hong Lu, the bulk carrier Rosalina and the tanker Nobler used the same route. Prior to the current blockade, an average of about 135 vessels per day passed through the Strait; that number has now significantly decreased.

U.S. Central Command stated that 'no vessel breached the blockade, and some were forced to alter course.'

Meanwhile, Tehran reported that 'certain tankers were nevertheless able to pass.'

U.S. Naval Operation and Regional Consequences

Amid these developments, the U.S. Navy has initiated an operation to locate and destroy Iranian naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran is known to possess thousands of sea mines, which could substantially impact maritime security in the region. Consequently, the situation in the Strait remains tense and warrants close observation by the international community.

The use of new routes by Iranian tankers suggests the country is adapting to changes in global shipping influenced by sanctions and military threats. The reduction in vessel traffic through the Strait points to heightened risks for maritime safety. A further deterioration could lead to escalated conflict and increase the need for international intervention to ensure stability along these crucial sea lanes.

As tensions escalate in the region, the U.S. Navy has launched a significant operation aimed at neutralizing Iranian naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz. This mission, involving over 20 ships, underscores the growing maritime security threats that are impacting global shipping routes.
