U.S. Navy Launches Major Mine-Clearing Mission in Strait of Hormuz, Deploying Over 20 Ships
U.S. Operation in the Strait of Hormuz
According to Главком: The U.S. Navy has initiated a new operation to locate and destroy Iranian naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz. According to military intelligence, some of these mines may already be deployed in this strategically vital waterway. Iran possesses thousands of naval mines, raising significant concerns, as the detonation of a commercial vessel could severely slow or even halt tanker traffic through the strait.
More than a dozen U.S. warships are currently in the Persian Gulf, with several additional vessels en route to the region. The total American force grouping is expected to exceed 20 ships and approximately 5,000 Marines. The fleet's primary mission is to enforce a blockade on Iranian vessels and execute counter-mine operations. The search involves surface ships, helicopters, and underwater drones, with Knifefish and Kingfish drones being used to scan the seabed.
Additional Forces Mobilized
The operation also includes the addition of two Avenger-class ships, the Boxer amphibious ready group with 2,200 Marines, and three littoral combat ships equipped with mine warfare systems. U.S. command is actively working to establish a safe transit route for commercial shipping to encourage the free flow of trade.
"Today we began the process of establishing a new passageway, and soon we will share this safe route with the maritime industry," – Brad Cooper.
While American forces have not yet detected any mines, commercial vessels have already restricted their movement through the strait, underscoring the seriousness of the situation and the need for a swift response.
This mission highlights the escalating regional tensions and the critical importance of the Strait of Hormuz to global trade, as a significant portion of the world's oil shipments passes through it. The strait is a perennial flashpoint, and U.S. actions here could significantly impact the global economic and energy landscape, as well as relations between Iran and the West.
As tensions in the region escalate, the U.S. Navy's efforts are not the only significant developments concerning the Strait of Hormuz. Recently, former President Trump announced a blockade of the strait, which has prompted stern warnings from Iran regarding potential retaliatory actions. This situation underscores the critical nature of maritime security in the area and its implications for global trade.
