Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is trying to obtain concessions from the U.S. in bilateral relations between the countries, without participating in the peace process in Ukraine. According to analysts from the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Putin is maintaining hope for an improvement in bilateral relations with the U.S.

In a statement on August 22, Putin noted that Donald Trump's assumption of the presidency in 2025 is a positive step in bilateral relations. Another important meeting for Putin – with the head of the White House in Alaska – was also highly appreciated by the Russian leader.

'Putin has long sought to revive bilateral talks between the U.S. and Russia to divert attention from the war in Ukraine, obtain concessions from the United States, and continue his war in Ukraine without further sanctions or other penalties,' analysts emphasized.

Putin expressed hope that meetings with Trump will be 'first steps' toward 'full-scale restoration' of bilateral relations between the countries. ISW's analysis also indicates Putin's concern over potential further U.S. sanctions that could hinder Russian military actions.

Putin continues to try to minimize risks for Russia from U.S. actions, hoping for support and cooperation in future relations between the countries.
