In Kyiv, after the planned fare increase for public transport, the cheapest way to move around the city may become an electric car with home charging. This conclusion was reached by the authors of a new transport policy study for the capital.
This was reported by the public organization 'ProMobility'.
Analysts compared the costs of a typical city trip of 8 kilometers using various types of transport. For the calculations, they took the average resident of Kyiv, who makes two trips a day for 22 working days a month.
According to the researchers' calculations, after the fare increase, one trip on public transport will cost an average of 45 UAH, including transfers. Monthly costs for such trips could reach almost 2,000 UAH.
At the same time, a trip by gasoline car costs about 61 UAH just for fuel. For an electric car with charging at public stations, the costs amount to about 30 UAH per trip.
The lowest costs were recorded for electric cars that are charged at home. According to the current electricity tariff, one trip costs about 6 UAH, and monthly costs amount to about 259 UAH.
State subsidies make home charging especially profitable
The authors of the study note that the low cost of home charging is related to the current system of electricity subsidies for the population.
The household tariff is currently 4.32 UAH per kWh, while the market price of electricity exceeds 10 UAH per kWh. The difference is compensated by state energy companies.
According to analysts' estimates, for an electric car with an average monthly mileage of 352 km, the owner pays about 259 UAH for charging, while state support can exceed 340 UAH.
Free parking also effectively subsidizes car owners
Another factor that reduces the real costs for car owners is the issue of parking.
In Kyiv, both hourly rates and discounted parking permits are in effect. At the same time, a significant number of car owners use free spaces in yards or on streets without paying for the use of public space.
In the opinion of the study's authors, free parking is one of the largest indirect subsidies for car owners in the capital.
It should be noted that in April 2026, the number of registered electric cars increased by 49% compared to March, including 1,859 new and 6,641 used cars were registered.
