Kyiv Residents Propose Renaming Lukianivska Metro Station to 'Invincible'

Мешканці Києва висунули ідею перейменувати станцію метро Лук'янівська на «Непереможна».

Petition Calls for Metro Station Name Change

A petition has been filed on the Kyiv City Council website to rename the 'Lukianivska' metro station to 'Nepoborna' (Invincible). The initiative was launched by Dmytro Nikolaievskyi, who argues the new name would honor the heroism of modern Ukrainian society. According to Nikolaievskyi,

“the station has already become a symbol of Ukrainian resilience and the capital’s ability to recover despite constant enemy attacks”
. For the petition to be considered, it must gather 6,000 signatures within 57 days. As of the time of writing, only 139 signatures had been collected.

Public Reaction and Broader Context

Among the alternative names discussed, 'Lukianivska Fortress' has also been proposed. However, most commenters oppose the renaming. Vitalia Bobyr remarked,

“Leave it alone”
, while Alona Matsukevych added, “Lukianivska is Lukianivska. Period.” Olena Sydorenko believes the timing is wrong, stating it is “not the right time” for such a change, and Ihor Kravets suggested focusing on “something more useful.”

Meanwhile, news reports highlight a massive attack by the Russian Federation on Ukraine that occurred overnight on May 24. This assault affected six Ukrainian regions, with 87 casualties reported in Kyiv alone, including three minors. Two fatalities were also recorded. In the capital, 432 residential buildings were damaged, most heavily in the Shevchenkivskyi district, which saw 262 structures hit. Russia deployed ballistic and hypersonic missiles along with hundreds of strike drones. The cost of this attack is estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars. The Russian Armed Forces continue to “systematically target” defense-industrial enterprises in Kyiv.

Thus, the petition to rename the Lukianivska metro station to 'Nepoborna' is unfolding against a backdrop of significant challenges facing the country and varied community responses to such initiatives.

The discussion about renaming the metro station occurs amid intense informational and social tensions driven by the ongoing war. Public reaction to this proposal reflects not only cultural but also political sentiments prevailing in Ukraine. In wartime, questions of symbolism and naming can profoundly impact national identity and patriotic morale.
