Capital Repair Scheme for the Running Tunnel
Authorities in Kyiv have drawn up a plan for a comprehensive renovation of a running tunnel on the Obolonsko–Teremkivska metro line, specifically the stretch between Tarasa Shevchenka and Pochaina stations. Design documentation for the single-track repair has been completed, and a full state expert review has been conducted, resulting in a positive expert opinion. The entire preparatory and construction phase is scheduled to last up to 23 months.
Vitali Klitschko stated: 'We have now developed project documentation for the planned capital repair of the running tunnel on one track between the Tarasa Shevchenka and Pochaina stations of the Kyiv metro’s Obolonsko–Teremkivska line. We carried out a comprehensive state expert review and received a positive expert report.'
Options for Carrying Out the Repair Work
Two options are being considered for executing the repairs:
- The first option involves conducting the work without altering train operations, by opening an excavation pit, relieving structural loads, and restoring the tunnel to its design specifications.
- The second option may require a temporary change in train traffic organization, lasting approximately five months. As Vitali Klitschko noted: 'We are currently working on two possible scenarios for the repair.'
Additionally, the Kyiv Metro has transitioned to a digital service model, which includes closing ticket offices at Vokzalna, Pochaina, and Vydubychi stations. These stations handle the highest passenger volumes from suburban areas and other regions, and the closure of ticket offices marks the final stage of the metro’s full digitalization.
The repair work will involve soil stabilization, reinforcement of tunnel structures and track superstructure elements, as well as the installation of modern systems for monitoring the tunnel’s technical condition.
This planned capital overhaul of the running tunnel on the Obolonsko–Teremkivska line represents a significant step toward enhancing the safety and reliability of the Kyiv metro. During the project’s implementation, city officials aim to maintain passenger convenience by offering options that minimize disruptions to train service. Furthermore, the shift to digital service at metro stations reflects a broader push to modernize infrastructure and improve the passenger experience.
As the Kyiv Metro embarks on this significant renovation, it's essential to note the recent transition to a fully digital ticketing system. With cash purchases no longer available at ticket offices, passengers must adapt to the new digital model. This change aligns with the ongoing improvements in public transport, making it crucial for commuters to stay informed about the latest updates.
