Change of preventive measure for Nestor Shufrych
The Kyiv Appeal Court changed the preventive measure for Member of Parliament Nestor Shufrych, allowing a bail of 33 million hryvnias to be paid. This decision was made on January 6, 2024. Shufrych has been in custody for over two years.
Previously, on September 15, 2023, Pechersk District Court judge Serhiy Vovk ruled to take Shufrych into custody. The Kyiv Appeal Court considered Shufrych's lawyers' appeal on October 11, 2023, but then refused to grant it. The Security Service of Ukraine accuses Shufrych of state treason.
Possibility of release on bail
According to the new decision, once Shufrych pays the specified amount, he will have the right to be released on bail. Shufrych's lawyer Viktor Karpenko noted:
“Once the client pays this money, he is entitled to be released on bail.”
At the same time, Oleksandr Shufrych, the MP's son, expressed confidence that “if the decision has been made and it has entered into legal force, then, of course, his father has enough people ready to stand surety for him.”
Additionally, on December 27, 2024, the court allowed Shufrych to perform his parliamentary duties. In April 2025, he registered a draft law from jail, and in July 2025, he wrote a draft law for the protection of prisoners. At the end of September 2025, the Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Kyiv began examining the indictment against Shufrych.
The change of preventive measure for Nestor Shufrych highlights the complex legal status of the MP in Ukraine, who is facing serious accusations. The permission to pay bail may indicate certain changes in judicial practice, as well as the possibility for Shufrych to continue his political activities despite criminal charges. This decision is likely to be an important milestone in his case, which attracts public and media attention.
