Kyiv Metro Records 570 Escalator Stoppages in June

У червні київський метрополітен зафіксував 570 випадків зупинок ескалаторів.

Escalator Safety in the Kyiv Metro

Kyiv Metro municipal enterprise has urged passengers to follow escalator safety rules after a surge in stoppages. In June 2026, 570 escalator stops were recorded, all caused by passenger carelessness.

The main reasons for the stoppages include:

  • foreign objects getting caught in escalator components (181 cases);
  • emergency stop button activations (263 cases);
  • unnecessary use of the emergency stop lever (30 cases).

At Universytet station, a dropped mobile phone blocked the escalator. The most common safety violations observed by the metro are:

  • failing to hold the handrail;
  • running on the escalator;
  • sitting on the steps;
  • stepping over the yellow safety line.

Frequent causes of escalator stoppages include:

  • bags, packages, and long clothing hems;
  • coins;
  • heels and shoes, especially sneakers with soft rubber soles.

New Fare Prices for Public Transport

Additionally, starting July 15, 2026, new public transport fares are planned for Kyiv. A single ticket will cost 30 UAH. Trips purchased before July 14, 2026, will remain valid until September 14, 2026, after which unused trips will be automatically refunded in cash. However, the new fare has sparked public outrage, as shown by a petition that gathered 6,000 signatures.

The fare change will also impact household budgets. For an average family of three, the 30 UAH tariff will result in nearly 35,000 UAH in extra annual expenses. After the adjustment, a monthly pass for Kyiv's public transport will rank fourth among European capitals, behind only London, Amsterdam, and Stockholm.

The rising number of escalator stoppages in the Kyiv metro highlights the need for greater passenger awareness of transport safety. The introduction of new fares, which has caused public discontent, also underscores the financial challenges facing the capital's residents. Amid these changes, finding a balance between safety and affordability in public transport is crucial.

As the Kyiv Metro faces an increase in escalator stoppages, the city's public transport system is also undergoing changes. Recent adjustments to bus routes, such as modifications to routes 46 and 112 due to a fair, highlight the ongoing efforts to improve urban mobility. Staying informed about these changes can help passengers navigate the system more effectively amidst the evolving transport landscape.
