Surface electric transport in the capital, which has been inactive for over 40 days, will be able to return to the routes only after the stabilization of the situation in the energy system. The KMDA stated that the decision depends on the confirmation of stable electricity supply and infrastructure safety. This is reported by Ukrainian Truth.

In response to journalists' inquiries, the Department of Transport Infrastructure of the Kyiv City State Administration noted: 'The restoration of electric transport movement is possible after energy workers confirm stable electricity supply and under the condition of safe operation of the infrastructure.'

Restoration of electric transport movement depends on the stability of the energy system

Currently, about 96% of available buses are operating daily on the routes in the capital. They have been engaged by the municipal enterprise 'Kyivpastrans' to partially compensate for the absence of trams and trolleybuses. The metro operates in regular mode.

Together with KP 'Kyivpastrans', the city authorities developed an action plan in case of electricity outages. It includes:

  • launching duplicate bus routes on main directions with the highest passenger flow
  • defining bus movement schemes considering actual load
  • making decisions depending on the availability of electricity supply, road conditions, and safety conditions.

Public transport operation in Kyiv is complicated by staffing problems

The department emphasizes that it is impossible to fully replace electric transport with buses due to the different scale of transportation systems. They involve available rolling stock and the maximum number of drivers. A similar situation is observed with private carriers.

Additionally, the operation of transport is affected by staff shortages in the conditions of martial law. According to the department, the state does not provide 100% protection for drivers of KP 'Kyivpastrans', which negatively affects both transportation and the repair of rolling stock.

Despite the difficult situation, municipal enterprises in the transport and road sector, drivers, and energy workers are working in an enhanced mode to stabilize transportation in the capital.

Let us remind you that the Kyiv municipal enterprise 'Kyivpastrans' announced a tender for the purchase of 40 modern low-floor trolleybuses through the Prozorro system, with an expected cost of 1.008 billion UAH. The final delivery date is set for October 1, 2026.
