Every Hour of Uninterrupted Sitting Increases Cancer Mortality Risk, Study Finds

Why This Research on Sitting Behavior Matters

A study published in PLOS Medicine has uncovered a critical link between prolonged, uninterrupted sitting and a higher risk of dying from cancer. Led by Frederick Ho from the University of Glasgow in the UK, the research team analyzed data from 91,292 participants in the UK Biobank. The findings show that each additional hour of continuous sitting is associated with a 9% increase in the risk of cancer-related death.

How the Study Was Conducted

Participants wore activity monitors for seven days, and their health was tracked for an average of 12.38 years. Prolonged sitting was defined as periods of at least 30 minutes where the participant remained seated for 90% or more of the time without a break. In contrast, interrupted sitting involved shorter intervals broken up by activity that accounted for more than 10% of the time.

According to the results, individuals who spent more time in prolonged, uninterrupted sitting had a higher risk of dying from cancer, with a hazard ratio of 1.09 (95% confidence interval 1.06–1.11). However, the study also highlights the positive impact of light physical activity. Replacing one hour of prolonged sitting with light movement was linked to a 12% lower risk of cancer mortality.

Our findings suggest that the health impact of sitting behavior may depend not only on total sitting time but also on whether it is accumulated in long, continuous periods or broken up by activity.

The study authors add that 'current health guidelines largely focus on moderate or vigorous physical activity, but our results show that light movement should not be ignored.'

This research underscores the importance of addressing prolonged sitting and encourages incorporating activity into daily routines to reduce cancer-related risks. It highlights the need to integrate more physical movement into everyday life, especially given that sitting has become a staple of many modern professions.
