According to НВ — Техно: A study conducted by a team from the University of Edinburgh and published in the journal Radiology has uncovered a connection between the quality-specifically the density-of muscles in the back, chest, and rib cage and the likelihood of suffering a heart attack or dying prematurely. The analysis was based on heart scans from 1,722 patients, predominantly individuals over the age of fifty, who sought medical care for chest pain. By employing artificial intelligence, the researchers were able to assess the density (brightness) of muscle tissue in cardiac computed tomography (CT) images.
According to the findings, every 10-point increase in muscle brightness was associated with a 31% reduction in heart attack risk. Moreover, the same 10-point increase in muscle brightness was linked to a 39% lower risk of death over the following ten years. Notably, muscle size did not appear to influence the risk of heart attack or early death.
The research was partially funded by the British Heart Foundation, a UK-based charity. The lead author of the study is Professor Michelle Williams. Professor Bryan Williams, Chief Scientific and Medical Officer at the British Heart Foundation, commented that
“participants with denser muscle mass were likely more physically active, which in turn may explain their better heart health-another confirmation of the power of exercise”
