Disruptions at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (ZNPP) are becoming increasingly severe, reports the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Currently, six reactors at the plant are in cold shutdown mode, but constant cooling is still necessary for the safe operation of systems and active zones.
The situation with power supply for ZNPP is particularly challenging. In May, there were issues with one of the power transmission lines, so the plant now depends on a single 750 kV line, creating significant vulnerability.
'The team has documented growing difficulties in providing cooling water for the six reactors, especially under high temperatures,' emphasizes the IAEA.
In addition, agency experts noted smoke at the administrative building of the plant and received information about shelling in the industrial zone near ZNPP. This combination of technical malfunctions, power supply issues, and military actions nearby makes the situation at ZNPP critical.
ZNPP faces serious challenges in maintaining the necessary level of reactor cooling, associated with problems in power supply and intensified military actions in the area. This confirms the extreme vulnerability of the nuclear power plant in the context of the tense situation in eastern Ukraine.
