Increase in defense spending and support for Ukraine

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized the need for an increase in defense spending by Alliance countries and support for Ukraine to ensure peace in Europe during an interview with Bild. According to him, Europe's security directly depends on such investments, as the situation on the continent remains tense.

Rutte noted that Russia has lost up to 1.1 million people killed and wounded, which indicates the seriousness of military actions. In this context, he cited the example of Estonia, Lithuania, and Poland, which plan to allocate over 5% of their gross domestic product for defense needs in 2026. These steps are important for strengthening the defense capabilities of NATO member countries.

The need for Alliance readiness

Furthermore, Rutte mentioned that German intelligence has data on a possible attack on NATO from the Kremlin, highlighting the need for the Alliance to be ready for any challenges.

“We must invest in defense, strengthening our capabilities,” he emphasized.
Mark Rutte also expressed concern about the intentions of Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating that
“Putin is willing to sacrifice 1.1 million of his people for minimal territorial gains.”
These words underline the seriousness and danger that Russia's actions pose to stability in Europe.

The statements of the NATO Secretary General reflect the current security challenges facing Europe amid growing aggression from Russia. The increase in defense spending by Alliance countries, particularly in Eastern Europe, is a response to threats arising from the conflict in Ukraine. This indicates NATO's intentions to strengthen its position and prevent further destabilization of the region.
