“Today, the world celebrates International Olympic Day, an event that for over 130 years has united people around the values of friendship, respect, and the pursuit of excellence. Throughout Ukraine’s independent participation in the Olympic Games, our athletes have earned 160 medals. Our sportsmen and women continue to honorably represent Ukraine on the global stage, raising the blue-and-yellow flag and reminding the world that Ukrainian sport remains strong, dignified, and alive.”
Among the fallen is decorated track-and-field athlete Ihor Bodnar, a defender of Ukraine who died on June 6, 2026, while carrying out a combat mission in the Sumy region. Bodnar was a Master of Sports of international class and a silver medalist at the 2000 Sydney Paralympics, competing in the 1500-meter run.
