Ukrainian Air Defense

The Armed Forces of Ukraine decided not to build a continuous air defense along the front line, as this proved to be an impossible task. Instead, they focus on the mobility and maneuverability of defense systems.

According to Yuriy Ihnat, head of the communication department of the Air Forces, constant air defense along the entire front line is unattainable. Establishing stationary positions in frontline territories proves to be an extremely challenging task. Therefore, Ukrainian air defense has adapted to the conditions of war by constantly changing positions and employing maneuver tactics. This complicates the task for enemy reconnaissance.

'The enemy invariably conducts aerial reconnaissance and the information about where the air defense is located is extremely valuable for them,' warned Ihnat.

An important element of the tactic has been the use of misinformation measures. To ensure the effectiveness of the defense system, modern Western complexes are utilized, such as IRIS-T, NASAMS, Patriot, as well as less powerful means including the Raven UAV. This tiered structure allows compensating for the lack of a continuous defensive perimeter.

The strategy of mobile air defense has proven to be an effective solution in conditions where technical limitations do not allow for absolute protection of the entire territory.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine decided not to focus on continuous air defense along the front line but instead to emphasize the mobility and maneuverability of defense systems. This approach allows for better adaptation to the conditions of war and complicates the task for enemy reconnaissance. The use of modern complexes and Western technologies, as well as the implementation of misinformation measures, makes the Ukrainian air defense more effective in countering potential threats.
