IOC’s Stance on Rebuilding the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has turned down a request from Ukrainska Pravda to help restore the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage site damaged by Russian strikes. In its response, the committee explained that its resources are dedicated to athlete support, not cultural restoration. Since 2022, the IOC has been actively aiding Ukraine’s Olympic community through its Solidarity Fund, which has assisted roughly 3,000 Ukrainian athletes and coaches.
On June 15, 2023, a Russian attack on Ukraine caused severe damage to the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. The historic complex, a UNESCO-listed landmark, was hit by a massive assault that ignited the roof of the Dormition Cathedral, leading to a large fire. Sacred items and liturgical objects were evacuated from the site, while the Church of the Saviour at Berestove resumed operations by June 17.
IOC’s Official Reply
In response to the inquiry, the IOC stated:
“Unfortunately, the modern world suffers from too many wars and conflicts that directly impact millions of people and cause significant damage to infrastructure, including sports facilities. As the IOC is a sports organization, it focuses its resources where it can have the greatest impact: supporting athletes and the Olympic community through sport.”
The committee also confirmed its willingness to collaborate with the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine and international federations once conditions allow.
“As soon as the situation permits, the IOC will actively work with the NOC of Ukraine and international federations to identify where we can best support reconstruction efforts for sports infrastructure in Ukraine and continue our support for the Ukrainian Olympic community,”the committee noted.
In 2019, the IOC allocated 500,000 euros for the restoration of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. However, in this case, the organization’s priorities are focused on helping Ukrainian athletes prepare for the 2024 Paris Olympics, the 2026 Milan Winter Olympics, and the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.
The IOC’s statement underscores its commitment to channeling resources toward athlete support amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. While the organization cannot participate in restoring cultural sites like the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, it will continue to back Ukrainian athletes as they train for upcoming international competitions. This reflects the IOC’s effort to preserve sporting traditions and foster athletic development even in challenging circumstances. Support for the Ukrainian Olympic community will remain a priority until the situation in the country stabilizes.
The IOC's recent decision has sparked significant debate within the sports community, especially in light of ongoing controversies surrounding Russia's involvement in international competitions.
