Ukrenergo’s Invoice Sparks a Diplomatic Move
Moldova has received an invoice from Ukraine’s national power grid operator, NPC Ukrenergo, for roughly 500,000 lei (around €20,000). The charge covers repairs to the Isaccea–Vulcănești electricity transmission line, which was damaged during a drone attack on March 23. In response, Chișinău intends to forward this bill to Russia, seeking reimbursement for the restoration work.
Moldova’s Energy Minister, Dorin Junghietu, addressed the matter, stating:
'We received the invoice from our colleagues at Ukrenergo. The cost amounts to—I can’t give the exact figure right now—about €20,000, which is roughly 500,000 lei.' - Dorin Junghietu
He further remarked, 'They attacked the line, they damaged our infrastructure.' The state-owned enterprise Moldelectrica will provide the funds to cover the expense.
Moldova’s Energy Infrastructure Under Strain
Since the onset of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, Moldova has experienced debris from missiles and drones falling on its territory—a clear sign of the heightened risks and threats to the country’s energy network. Junghietu also noted:
'And moving forward, we’ll see how this amount will be compensated.' - Dorin Junghietu
This episode highlights not only the vulnerability of Moldova’s energy infrastructure but also the broader challenges the nation faces amid regional hostilities. Seeking compensation for the repairs could mark a key step in safeguarding Moldova’s energy security, while underscoring the need for international cooperation to address the fallout from the conflict. The issue of recovering costs for destroyed or damaged property during wartime remains pressing, demanding attention from global organizations and states alike.
As Moldova navigates the complexities of its energy security, the recent report of dozens of airspace violations by Russia adds another layer of concern. These incidents not only highlight the ongoing threats faced by the nation but also emphasize the urgent need for robust measures to protect its critical infrastructure amidst the escalating tensions in the region.
