Ukraine Braces for -16°C February Chill Before a Major Warm-Up

Україна готується до лютих морозів у лютневі дні перед різким потеплінням.

Forecast Predicts Deep Freeze, Then a Steady Thaw for Ukraine

Meteorologist Natalka Didenko forecasts a severe cold snap for late February in Ukraine, to be followed by a sustained period of warming. The nights of February 21st and 22nd will be the coldest, with temperatures plunging to between -10°C and -16°C. While daytime highs on the 21st will range from -2°C to -7°C, the nighttime temperature in Kyiv is expected to drop to a frigid -15°C.

On February 22nd, southern and western Ukraine will see temperatures from -2°C to -6°C. In Kyiv, the daytime high will climb slightly to -1°C, though it will fall back to -12°C overnight. Cloud cover will increase in the capital that day, but no significant precipitation is expected. Meanwhile, wet snow and rain are possible in southern Odesa region on the 21st, with rain forecast primarily for western regions on the 22nd.

Weekend Outlook and the Week Ahead

Dry conditions will dominate across most of Ukraine over the weekend. However, a stable warming trend is set to begin next week, bringing with it periods of fog and intermittent precipitation. As Natalka Didenko noted, there will be a few exceptions over the weekend: wet snow and rain are possible in southern Odesa region on Saturday, while Sunday will bring mainly rain to western areas.

This forecast indicates that while the intense frost is part of typical winter weather patterns for the region, its duration will be limited. The shift to warmer conditions expected next week will bring a welcome change, potentially easing daily routines and benefiting sectors like transport and agriculture. Such sharp temperature swings are not uncommon in Eastern Europe during seasonal transitions. It remains important to monitor weather updates, as conditions can change rapidly, particularly regarding precipitation and temperature fluctuations.
