The Plan for an Ivan Marchuk Museum
Ukraine's Ministry of Culture has announced it is working on establishing a museum for the artist Ivan Marchuk, a project for which the Ukrainian government has pledged resources for over two decades. In 2021, President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a decree to create the Ivan Marchuk Museum and Cultural Center of Contemporary Art. The decree, dated June 11, 2021, called for state budget funds to be allocated for reconstruction and for attracting sponsorship money. Marchuk, a renowned figure in Ukrainian art, is now 89 years old.
Currently, the museum operates as a branch of the National Art Museum. However, the Ministry of Culture lacks a separate budget program and the financial resources needed for the Marchuk museum's full development. Tetiana Berezhna, a representative of the Ministry, stated:
'The 2021 presidential decree obligated us to create such a museum, and presidential decrees must be executed. Work is ongoing, but it is too early to boast of any specific results. We have conducted an audit of the museum's current legal status.' Tetiana Berezhna
She further emphasized that a budget program exists within the Ministry covering all museums, including the National Art Museum, of which the prospective Marchuk museum is currently a branch. 'We have no additional funds at the moment. However, we are now launching a law on patronage, and perhaps through that... I think it is still too early to speak of any concrete victories in this direction,' added Tetiana Berezhna.
