Ukraine’s Response to Polish Criticism
Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has addressed criticism from Poland sparked by the naming of a military unit after heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). Spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi emphasized that historical discussions must remain professional and grounded in reliable sources. He warned that disputes over the past should not fuel conflict between Ukrainians and Poles, as only Moscow stands to benefit from such divisions.
Polish President’s Proposal and the Importance of Cooperation
Polish President Karol Nawrocki has suggested reviewing whether to revoke the Order of the White Eagle, Poland’s highest state honor, from Volodymyr Zelensky. This matter is slated for discussion at a meeting of the order’s chapter on June 8. Zelensky received the award on April 5, 2023, during a visit to Warsaw, where it was presented by former Polish President Andrzej Duda.
Tykhyi also stressed the critical role of Polish support amid Russian aggression, stating:
“We cannot allow quarrels over the past to undermine our resistance to the common enemy now, when Ukraine, with Poland’s backing, is holding back Russian aggression. We are grateful to Poland and the Polish people, who have supported Ukraine from the very first moments of this unprovoked and criminal war.”
Over the past year and a half, Ukraine and Poland have revived a historians’ congress and resumed efforts to locate and exhume remains, while also commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Hrubieszów operation. Finding common ground on historical memory and modern challenges is essential to strengthening bilateral ties.
The current tensions over historical issues between Ukraine and Poland highlight the need for ongoing dialogue and cooperation, especially in the context of their shared struggle against Russian aggression. Mutual support remains critically important, as it can influence regional stability. Reviving joint initiatives, such as the historians’ congress, may foster better understanding and help resolve historical disagreements, thereby reinforcing bilateral relations.
The ongoing debate surrounding the historical ties between Ukraine and the Polish Insurgent Army has intensified, as Poland assesses its stance on awarding Zelensky. This development underscores the broader implications of their historical relationship and the necessity for mutual understanding in the face of contemporary challenges.
