Serhiy Vlasenko's Allegations of Pressure from Law Enforcement
Serhiy Vlasenko, a member of Ukraine's parliament from the 'Batkivshchyna' faction, has publicly claimed he is facing pressure from law enforcement, specifically citing increased scrutiny from the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU). This follows his appointment in June 2025 to chair the Verkhovna Rada's Temporary Investigative Commission (TIC) on corruption. Such claims highlight the ongoing tensions between Ukraine's political establishment and its independent anti-corruption bodies.
Vlasenko stated that after assuming leadership of the commission, he began receiving information from various sources about NABU detectives taking actions concerning him personally.
"I cannot speak for others, but as soon as I headed the TIC, I started receiving certain information from various sources,"he remarked. These allegations have caused concern among some fellow lawmakers, as accusations of pressure from law enforcement remain a sensitive and recurrent issue in Ukrainian politics.
Previous Scrutiny and Denial of Rumors
The MP also referenced past investigations during the presidencies of Viktor Yanukovych and under Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko, noting that no grounds were found at that time to open criminal cases against him. Vlasenko emphasized his compliance, stating he pays all his taxes, 'unlike many others'.
Furthermore, he firmly denied rumors that the commission he leads was created with the intent to dismantle NABU or the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO).
"This is untrue,"Vlasenko said, addressing the accusations. Oleksandr Klymenko currently heads SAPO, underscoring the complex ecosystem of Ukraine's anti-corruption infrastructure.
Consequently, the situation surrounding Vlasenko and the parliamentary commission continues to attract significant public attention, as it touches on critical questions about the independence of law enforcement and the effectiveness of anti-corruption measures in Ukraine.
Vlasenko's statements underscore the persistent tensions within Ukraine's anti-corruption landscape, where interactions between lawmakers and investigative bodies are frequently contentious. Public skepticism about the progress of anti-corruption efforts adds a layer of complexity to these political dynamics, shaping both policy debates and societal sentiment.
