Artemis 2 Mission Launches, Sending Crew on First Lunar Journey in Five Decades

Запуск місії Artemis 2: команда вирушає в космос для дослідження Місяця вперше за останні 50 років.

Artemis 2 Mission Underway

NASA has successfully launched the Artemis 2 mission from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The liftoff occurred at 01:24 Kyiv time on April 2, with the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and Orion spacecraft departing precisely on schedule. This mission marks a historic return to lunar exploration for human spaceflight. Onboard the Orion capsule are astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen. Victor Glover is the first Black astronaut on a lunar mission, Christina Koch is the first woman, and Jeremy Hansen is the first Canadian to venture into deep space. The expedition is scheduled to last 10 days.

Mission Objectives and Future Plans

The primary objectives for the Artemis 2 crew include:

  • Flying around the far side of the Moon;
  • Testing critical life support systems;
  • Operating the Orion spacecraft in the actual deep-space environment;
  • Laying the groundwork for a future crewed landing on the lunar surface.

Artemis 2 represents the first crewed mission beyond low-Earth orbit since 1972. Subsequent missions in the Artemis program, such as Artemis 3, plan to dock with landers from SpaceX and Blue Origin, while Artemis 4 aims to land astronauts near the Moon's south pole. The program's ultimate goal is to gather experience for future crewed missions to Mars.

In related spaceflight news, NASA has reduced the number of planned missions for Boeing's Starliner spacecraft due to technical issues. The next Starliner flight to the International Space Station will be uncrewed. During its first crewed test flight in 2024, several thrusters in the spacecraft's orientation and control system failed. That Starliner mission was carrying NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams.

Separately, Russia has conducted its first rocket launch from the repaired Baikonur Cosmodrome launch pad, which had previously been damaged. The spacecraft is expected to dock with the ISS on March 24. However, after reaching orbit, one antenna of the 'Kurs' docking system failed to deploy.

These crewed missions, featuring a diverse team of astronauts, highlight the growing international collaboration in space exploration. However, the ongoing challenges faced by programs like Starliner and recent Russian launches underscore the persistent technical hurdles that can impact mission timelines across the global space industry.

While the Artemis 2 mission marks a significant milestone in lunar exploration, challenges persist in the realm of crewed spaceflight. Notably, NASA has decided to scale back its plans for Boeing's Starliner missions, opting for an uncrewed flight to the International Space Station instead. This decision follows technical difficulties encountered during Starliner's initial crewed test flight.
