Stepping on a Dog Kibble Led to Leg Amputation for Diabetic Woman

Під час нещасного випадку жінка, яка страждала на діабет, зазнала серйозних травм, що призвели до втрати кінцівки.

The Story of Jamie Stephen

A 39-year-old woman from Scotland, Jamie Stephen, who has type 1 diabetes, suffered severe injuries after stepping on a piece of dog food. This incident, which occurred while she was feeding her dog named Ted Bear, led to an infection, sepsis, three surgeries, and ultimately the amputation of her right leg. Jamie was diagnosed with diabetes at age seven, and over the past ten years, she began losing sensation in her feet due to diabetic nerve damage.

Jamie explained that she did not notice the piece of kibble when she was pouring it into the bowl. 'I didn't notice it for a minute or two, and then I lifted my foot—and saw that the food had left a mark,' she recalls. Five days after the injury, she was hospitalized with sepsis, and over the next five days, she underwent three complex surgeries. During the first operation, doctors removed dead tissue from the sole of her foot; during the second procedure, surgeons cut open her foot along the entire sole and found that a significant portion of the nerves had already died. As a result of these injuries, Jamie had to have her right leg amputated.

The woman noted that 'necrosis started almost immediately.' She remembers calling an ambulance on the fifth day and being rushed to the hospital. 'I was so scared, and when they told me I would have to have my leg amputated, I was devastated,' Jamie says. Since the amputation, she has been using a wheelchair for 19 months. 'Living with diabetes is hard. It negatively affects mental health, and I have become quite isolated,' she admits.

Life After Amputation

Jamie states that the main things that helped her cope were her dog Ted Bear and an active lifestyle. 'I never wanted diabetes to control my life, so I always lived a very active lifestyle,' she says. She was heavily involved in canoeing, archery, rafting, and kickboxing. However, Jamie now realizes that her life will change. 'I knew my life would change, but I didn't imagine how much,' she added.

Jamie emphasizes the importance of awareness about diabetes symptoms, particularly a sweet-smelling breath. 'I want to draw attention to symptoms like sweet-smelling breath. Not many people know about this,' she says. Despite all the difficulties, Jamie tries to turn the negative into a positive: 'I want to bring a little positivity to society. I try to live an active lifestyle by walking my dog, because I deserve to live, and my illness does not define me.'

This story highlights the potential risks for people with diabetes, especially the importance of caution in everyday life. Jamie's incident serves as a reminder of the need for regular health monitoring and awareness of symptoms that may indicate complications. Raising awareness about diabetes can help prevent similar situations in the future, as early detection of symptoms can significantly reduce the risk of serious complications.
