National Bank of Ukraine Unveils Easter Commemorative Coin
The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) has issued a new silver coin for Easter, celebrating the Polissia region's tradition of pysanka, or decorated Easter eggs. This art form, which holds deep roots in Ukrainian culture, was added to UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2024. The 10-hryvnia coin continues the 'Ukrainian Heritage' series, highlighting this significant cultural recognition. Pysanky are a cherished Easter tradition in Ukraine, with intricate designs that carry symbolic meaning.
Designed by Oleksandra Kuchynska, the coin is minted from 999 fine silver, containing 31.1 grams of pure silver. Its artistic value is enhanced with enamel and patina finishes. The mintage is limited to 15,000 pieces, and it is available for purchase through the NBU's numismatic online store.
This decorative art, which embodies centuries of Ukrainian culture and artistic skill, was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List in 2024. This year, we pay tribute to the traditions of one of Ukraine's oldest ethnographic regions—Polissia.
International Parallels and Changes to Currency
In a related international development, the Royal Canadian Mint has also released a pysanka-shaped coin, crafted from pure gold. The obverse of the Canadian coin features a profile of King Charles III, with the design created by artists Steven Rosati and Dave Melnychuk, a member of the Ukrainian Museum of Canada in Toronto.
Separately, the NBU has announced the final phase-out of older paper banknotes. The 1, 2, 5, and 10-hryvnia notes from the 2003–2007 series are no longer legal tender. Their gradual withdrawal began in 2020, as their average lifespan in circulation is approximately two and a half years.
Thus, the new commemorative coin and other financial system updates underscore the importance of cultural heritage and the evolution of currency in Ukraine. The Easter coin's issuance demonstrates the preservation and promotion of Ukrainian traditions in a global context, a key aspect of national identity. The UNESCO listing further aids international recognition of this cultural heritage. Meanwhile, the currency changes reflect Ukraine's adaptation to modern economic conditions and the need to update payment instruments.
As the National Bank of Ukraine continues to honor the rich tapestry of Ukrainian culture, the recent release of a commemorative coin celebrating Opishnia ceramics further exemplifies this commitment. This new addition showcases the artistry and heritage that are vital to the nation's identity.
