Deep in the Arabian Interior, Neanderthal Presence Now Dates Back 55,000 Years

Reassessing Artifacts From Jebel Katefe-1

A fresh study of stone tools uncovered at Jebel Katefe-1 (JKF-1), a site beside an ancient lake in Saudi Arabia, suggests Neanderthals may have traveled far into the peninsula's arid interior around 55,000 years ago. The research team used optically stimulated luminescence dating and statistical modeling to date the site and to determine whether the toolmakers were Neanderthals rather than Homo sapiens. Since no Neanderthal bones have been found in Arabia, the evidence remains indirect. The occupation seems to coincide with a shift toward wetter conditions.

What the Evidence Shows

The excavation is located near the town of Jubbah in the Nefud Desert. After comparing hundreds of sharp stone flakes from JKF-1 with collections from the Levant, northeastern Africa, and other Arabian sites, the researchers—led by Hugh Groucutt of the University of Malta—found that the JKF-1 tools most closely match those typically made by Neanderthals.

To refine the timeline, the team opened a new trench at JKF-1 and dated sand grains from the sediment. Earlier studies had put human activity there between 90,000 and 50,000 years ago; the new measurements narrow that window to roughly 55,000 years ago. At that time, Neanderthals appear to have been the only hominin group living in southwest Asia.

Knut Bretzke, an archaeologist at the University of Tübingen, suggests that a wetter phase may have drawn grazing animals deep into the desert, with Neanderthals following their prey. He cautions, however, that some sites in the model are surface scatters, where artifacts could have accumulated over long periods. Groucutt argues that the finding pushes the known Neanderthal range much farther south than previously documented.

Still, the case for an extended southern range rests on circumstantial evidence. "A fossil would help settle the matter," Groucutt says.

"Bones and ancient DNA decay quickly in Arabian heat, so stone tools remain the best available record."

Stefan Vasile, a lecturer at the University of Bucharest, also offered a cautious note: he does not want to be overly critical of earlier archaeological methods, but in the past researchers often recovered only larger or more complete bones, potentially skewing interpretations.

Overall, the new analysis of stone tools from JKF-1 adds significant clues about possible Neanderthal occupation in Arabia, although confirmation will require more fieldwork.

These results could reshape understanding of how Neanderthals spread and adapted to shifting climate in this region. They also point to migration routes in which early humans followed animals in search of resources, and they underline the importance of continued archaeological work in Arabia for building a clearer picture of Neanderthal life and its place in human evolutionary history. Because Arabia sits at the crossroads of Africa and Eurasia, this study also feeds into broader debates about ancient human movements across continents.
