Severe Weather in Ukraine: 600 Towns and Villages Lose Power, Lightning Injures Several People

Негода в Україні: 600 населених пунктів залишились без електрики, громи та блискавки призвели до травм у людей.

Power Outages Across Ukrainian Regions

Roughly 600 settlements across eight regions of Ukraine have been left without electricity due to harsh weather conditions. The affected areas include Kyiv, Chernihiv, Zhytomyr, Volyn, Lviv, Cherkasy, Ternopil, and Khmelnytskyi. To manage the situation, electricity consumption restrictions will be in effect from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

Storm Damage in Lviv and Volyn

In Lviv, where the storm caused extensive damage, a six-year-old girl was hospitalized after being struck by lightning. She is currently in intensive care. Additionally, strong winds toppled 30 trees in the city—nine in the Halytskyi district and seven in the Shevchenkivskyi district. The storm also damaged a building in the Shevchenkivskyi district administration and seven cars.

In the village of Ozero, Volyn region, a lightning strike near a body of water on June 29 injured seven people, including four children. In response to these events, Ukrenergo reminds industrial consumers and businesses that they can import more than 60% of their own electricity needs. This approach helps them avoid scheduled blackouts and significantly supports the power grid.

Ukrenergo also advises shifting the use of high-power appliances to daytime hours, between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM, and consuming electricity as sparingly as possible during evening hours from 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM.

The ongoing power supply challenges in Ukraine highlight the critical need for disaster preparedness and the vulnerability of infrastructure to extreme weather. Amid an energy crisis driven by multiple factors, including the war, such incidents further strain the system. Ukrenergo’s recommendations for rational electricity use aim not only to reduce the impact of outages but also to help maintain overall grid stability.
