Drunk Driving Statistics in Ukraine
Ukrainian authorities recorded 138,047 incidents of drunk driving last year, an 8% decrease from 2024. These figures reflect the broader situation with road traffic accidents (RTAs) involving intoxicated drivers. Furthermore, 643 RTAs resulting in deaths or injuries were caused by drunk drivers, a reduction of one-third compared to the previous year. These accidents claimed 73 lives and left 857 people injured.
Regional Trends
While national figures show improvement, four regions actually saw an increase in drunk driving cases. The highest numbers of recorded incidents were in:
- Dnipropetrovsk Oblast — 13,519 cases
- Kharkiv Oblast — 12,095 cases
- Odesa Oblast — 11,543 cases
The lowest numbers were observed in:
- Kherson Oblast — 1,138
- Chernivtsi Oblast — 1,596
- Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast — 1,897 cases
In 1,044 cases, criminal proceedings were initiated under Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine for driving under the influence. Approximately 59% of these cases reached the courts. Drunk driving was a factor in roughly 1 out of every 40 fatal or injury-causing RTAs, an improvement from 1 in 25 during both 2023 and 2024. In Kyiv Oblast alone, over two thousand road accidents occurred during 2025. This data highlights a persistent challenge for law enforcement and public safety campaigns across the country.
The statistics indicate a positive overall trend in reducing drunk driving and related accidents. However, despite the general decline, regional disparities underscore the need for enhanced control measures in areas where incident rates remain stubbornly high.
The reduction in fatalities also points to improvements in road safety, yet the issue of drunk driving remains serious and requires continued, targeted efforts for a lasting solution.
