Ukraine Endures Major Overnight Barrage
In the early hours of April 16, Russian forces launched a massive, coordinated air assault across Ukraine, firing more than 700 missiles and drones. The attack targeted multiple cities, including Kyiv, Odesa, Dnipro, and Kharkiv, as well as the Sumy and Poltava regions. This resulted in significant civilian casualties and widespread damage to infrastructure, marking one of the largest aerial bombardments of the war.
Ukrainian air defense systems tracked a total of 703 aerial targets during the assault. The vast majority, 659, were unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) of types including Shahed, Gerbera, Italmas, and other unidentified models. The attack also involved 44 missiles:
- 19 ballistic missiles, including Iskander-M and S-400 types
- 20 Kh-101 cruise missiles
- 5 Iskander-K cruise missiles
Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted 667 of the incoming threats, specifically:

- 8 ballistic missiles
- 4 Iskander-K cruise missiles
- 636 drones
Official reports confirm at least 17 people were killed in the attacks, including one child. In the capital, Kyiv, 4 people died, among them a 12-year-old boy, and the number of injured rose to 48.
"In the capital, two people died - a 12-year-old boy and a 35-year-old woman. Eighteen city residents are currently reported injured. Medics hospitalized 11 of the injured. Others received assistance on-site or as outpatients," stated the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
In Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, 3 people were killed and 34 wounded. The port city of Odesa suffered heavily, with 8 fatalities and 16 injured; the blast waves from impacts shattered over 300 windows in several buildings.
"The city endured several waves of missile and attack UAV strikes overnight. Infrastructure facilities and a residential building in the Hadzhibei district were damaged, and the shockwaves blew out over 300 windows in several buildings," reported Serhiy Lysak, head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration.
In the Kharkiv region, 4 people were injured, including a 66-year-old man and a 77-year-old woman in Kharkiv city, and a 28-year-old man and a 63-year-old woman in Merefa. The assault on the region involved 2 missiles, 1 guided aerial bomb, 12 Geran-2 drones, 4 Molniya drones, 2 FPV drones, and 42 UAVs of a type still being identified.
In Sumy Oblast, a drone strike hit a gas station and a medical facility. In Poltava Oblast, residential buildings in the Kremenchuk and Poltava districts were damaged, though no casualties were reported there.
