Germany restricts payments to Ukrainian refugees: what will change for thousands of people

Німеччина вводить обмеження на виплати для біженців з України: які нові умови чекають на тисячі людей.

Changes to Bürgergeld payments for Ukrainian refugees in Germany

Germany is preparing a bill that will restrict Bürgergeld payments to Ukrainian refugees. This decision comes as a result of the increasing number of Ukrainians arriving in Germany following the easing of restrictions on leaving Ukraine. It is noted that approximately 490,000 working-age Ukrainians are receiving this financial aid.

New government plans

According to the new government plans, the basic cash assistance for Ukrainians may decrease from 563 to 441 euros per adult. At the same time, payments for those Ukrainians who arrived in Germany before April 1, 2025, will remain under the old rules. This means that already existing refugees will not experience a reduction in payments, while new arrivals may receive less assistance.

Jurgenhardt, a representative of the German government, noted that Berlin is not interested in young Ukrainians staying in Germany instead of defending their country.

Thus, changes to Bürgergeld payments may significantly impact the financial support for Ukrainian refugees in Germany, especially for new arrivals who will find themselves in a more difficult economic situation. The reduction in payments may prompt new refugees to seek alternative means of financial support, as well as influence their decision to stay in Germany or return to Ukraine. This situation also reflects a shift in Germany's policy regarding refugee support in the context of the war in Ukraine and the need for peace restoration in the region.
