Strong Condemnation of the IOC’s Move

The National Olympic Committee of Ukraine has issued a strong protest against the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) ruling on May 7, 2026, which permits Belarusian athletes to compete internationally under their national symbols. This decision has drawn sharp criticism from Ukraine, which points to Russia’s war against Ukraine—a conflict that has claimed the lives of over 600 Ukrainian athletes and coaches. The committee further highlighted that the Belarusian National Olympic Committee is led by Viktor Lukashenko, the son of Belarus’s self-proclaimed president, Alexander Lukashenko.

Ukrainian Sports Officials React with Disappointment

The IOC’s decision has deeply disappointed Ukrainian sports officials, as it undermines core principles of fairness, accountability, and Olympic values. Over more than four years of full-scale war, Russia—backed by Belarus—has destroyed hundreds of sports facilities across Ukraine.

“The IOC’s decision sets a dangerous precedent for the entire international sports movement. Today, the world has received a signal that a country supporting military aggression and complicit in the war against Ukraine can return to the international stage without being held accountable for its actions.” - Vadym Guttsait

Moving forward, Ukraine’s National Olympic Committee plans to maintain its stance that as long as the war continues and Ukrainians are dying, representatives from states that back Russian aggression should not be fully represented in international sports under their national flags. A particular concern is that the leadership of the Belarusian National Olympic Committee remains in the hands of Viktor Lukashenko, a direct ally of Russia in the war against Ukraine.

This situation underscores the growing tension within the international sports community, where political circumstances increasingly influence athlete participation in competitions. By opposing the IOC’s decision, the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine stresses the importance of preserving Olympic values like fairness and accountability amid global conflicts. How events unfold next could shape the international sports community’s response to countries and their sports organizations that support aggression.

In light of the IOC's recent decision to allow Belarusian athletes to compete without restrictions, the situation raises significant concerns about the integrity of international sports.
